Basic Science
Programs

|
|
| Basic Science education is provided to the resident
in three formats. These include didactic education, integrated
case oriented conferences, and case management discussions.
Didactic education is provided through several conferences.
Predominantly these include the Anatomy Conference schedule,
the Basic Science Conference schedule, and the Pathology Conference.
Anatomy Conferences generally cover the gross anatomy of the
musculoskeleltal system through dissections and didactic presentations.
Physiology and biochemistry of bone and soft tissues are covered
within the context of the Basic Science Conference schedule.
Biomechanics is also covered within this lecture schedule. Bacteriology
and Pharmacology issues are raised within the physiology context
and within discussions on infections. Case oriented discussions
occur within the context of Pathology Conference, Spine Conference,
Hand Conference, and Trauma Conference. The relevant basic science
topics are raised when addressing the overall issues regarding
the management of specific cases. In addition, during pathology
conference, review of histological specimens is provided in
a case oriented discussion setting. Individual case management
issues provide further discussion among basic science topics.
The faculty reviews these issues as they arise in the management
of patients. Facilities utilized in basic science education
include the Pathology Conference Room and its eight head microscope
with video attachments, orthopaedic conference room and library
facilities, the gross anatomy lab of the medical school, and
the orthopaedic research laboratories. |
