Research
Activity

|
|
| Residents are required to complete at least one
research project in a publishable form. Clinical research is
ongoing and supervision is provided by many of the faculty. Clinical areas for research currently
include hip arthroplasty, trauma, upper extremity surgery, and
hip fracture. Laboratory research activity is available in biomaterials
under Dr. Jack Lemons. Motivated residents
who have designed research protocols or wish to participate
in research protocols are provided time free of clinical duties
on an individual basis. An individual resident's clinical skills
are taken into consideration on the volume of free time allowed
for research. The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery is developing
computerized database to improve clinical research. Support
personnel of nurse clinicians and secretarial and computer support
staff are available. Adequate laboratory space is provided within
the orthopaedic research laboratories. Additional space is available
through several faculties' dual appointments in the Engineering
School. Residents are encouraged to participate as their interest
allows. Funding for research projects is available on an individual
case basis from the resources of the Division of Orthopaedic
Surgery. Additional intramural funding is available for residents
early in their training. |
