| Orthopaedic Surgery residents at The University
of Alabama at Birmingham rotate through six institutions during
their 5 years of orthopaedic residency. These institutions include
University Hospital, the Veterans Administration Hospital, Cooper
Green Hospital, Children's Hospital of Alabama, UAB Highlands and St. Vincent Hospital.
Each institution provides a unique perspective and patient population
for a variety of orthopaedic conditions. The University Hospital
is the main Hospital of the program. It serves as a major trauma
center with tertiary referral base covering several sub-specialties.
Services include Hand Surgery including brachial plexus, Trauma
Surgery, Adult Reconstruction including oncology, Foot and Ankle,
Spine and General Orthopaedic Surgery. During rotations at University
Hospital, residents normally rotate on one of three teams: Joint
Reconstruction/Tumors, Trauma/Spine, Upper Extremity. The residents
have the opportunity to see patients preoperatively and be involved
in the decision making process. They frequently can then operate
on the same patients and follow them through their postoperative
hospital course and into the outpatient clinic visits during
their rehabilitation. This provides a comprehensive experience
involving the entire management of these patients. |
